Where Our Firewood Comes From

All of our timber comes from locally managed woodland. The more local it is, the better, both for the haulage into our yard and for the environmental impact. Much of our recent timber has been cut down because of the spread of ash dieback disease, and we also source timber from local estates, where thinning helps woodland health and biodiversity.

Every log we sell can be traced back to local woodland. We don't repackage wholesale wood, and we don't import any of it. Most of it is felled between autumn and spring, when the sap is down. It's all British hardwood: mostly ash logs, with oak logs and beech logs coming through too.

How We Process and Dry It

The timber comes in on the lorry and gets stacked neatly at our yard in Wisborough Green, run by five friends based in West Sussex. From there it goes through our processors, old but reliable machines that cut and split it into stove friendly lengths. Once it's split, the firewood logs pass through a trommel cleaner, which separates out any shards and sawdust before the wood goes near a bag.

After that, the logs go into cages and vented bags with plenty of air moving through them, and the wind and a full summer's heat do the drying. We check our stock all year round to keep the moisture left in the wood under 20%, for a good, hot burn. Every batch is tested before it's bagged and sent out for delivery. It's ready to burn.

What Makes the Best Firewood

Dry hardwood with less than 20% moisture left in it lights faster and burns hotter and cleaner, because less of the fire's heat goes into driving out the moisture that's left.

What We Sell

Our firewood for sale comes in two sizes.

  • A tonne bag: a vented builders bag measuring 80 by 80 by 80 centimetres, holding roughly 180 logs, about four to six weeks of evening fires in a smaller stove. The bag stays with you and goes back on your next order.
  • A tipper load: tipped loose from the back of the truck, roughly four tonne bags' worth of wood.

The smallest order is a single tonne bag or a tipper load, and for a larger or trade order, call us. Kindling nets are kiln dried softwood and log nets are kiln dried hardwood. Add either to a tonne bag or tipper load going to the same address with no minimum, or order them on their own with a minimum of 20 kindling nets or 20 log nets. Kiln dried logs are also available to order.
